Theatre is a roadmap to self-discovery
For me theater has been a tool to explore my emotions. I think it’s kind of a spiritual device to connect people. Art has a way of changing the activity of people’s brains. The trust hormone, oxytocin actually increases with character driven stories. (Zak, P.) This increases our empathy. We care more. Human struggle and eventual triumph is a great way to motivate. We must capture peoples hearts by first attracting their minds. If you can convey the motivation behind your actions to the people who follow you, they have a greater understanding of you. I have discovered, explored the characteristics that makes a person great. What drives success? Mostly it is a 100% belief in something. However sometimes we get biased from things. Listening in on Brent Blair’s USC class I came across the Imago that Plato mentioned and how co-authorship is important. We can’t just sit back and see the surface level of something; we must always delve into the bigger picture. Like osmosis it must go through ones skin. We conducted an exercise where we had to be what society thinks we are, the wrong idea of who we are. Then we have to act it out in a ridiculous exaggerated manner and deny that that is us. Powerful exercises such as these help us change the reference experiences that we have about ourselves, guiding us towards self-actualization. Comments?
